Austin, Texas Jun 11, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - Jacqueline Harrington is a Black homeowner and pro se litigant who claims she has spent the last two years fighting a web of real estate fraud, insurance misconduct, and legal abuse. These stemmed from an insurance claim filed in April 2021 with Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. Harrington said her valid claim for home damage led to unexpected legal troubles after two conflicting deeds were allegedly filed with the Travis County Appraisal District. The filings then broke the title chain and triggered a Quiet Title lawsuit (D-1-GN-24-002644) by Build the Asset, LLC. This is the company that Harrington says never even owned the property.
In May 2025, the court disclosures revealed that the Idaho-based company had no legal title, and the entity that sold the property to them allegedly lacked ownership as well. Despite everything, the title was transferred with Spartan Titles help. Fidelity National Title, represented by attorney John Shim, allegedly withheld records proving an active title claim during litigation. Harrington and Don Grant, her common-law spouse, previously returned $74,000 to Spartan Title under a mutual rescission agreement. Yet no correction to the title was made. Instead, Harrington was accused of filing a fake deed that led to what she calls a malicious prosecution and retaliatory arrest. What began as a regular claim turned into a trap for Harrington. The truth came out when we got the disclosures. The company that sued us never owned the property, and the company that sold it to them didnt either, she said.
Harrington further alleges that a coordinated effort to reroute insurance payments was made. It was triggered under the Texas Prompt Payment of Claims Act to third parties with no legal claim. Harrington names Nationwide Insurance, Spartan Title, Fidelity National Title, and others in a federal lawsuit (1:24-CV-00247-DAE). She claimed civil rights violations and ongoing efforts to suppress her case in this lawsuit. In addition to this, Harrington alleges misconduct by Patrick M. Kemp, a Texas attorney tied to the State Bar Disciplinary Council. She says Kemp played a role in suppressing filings and filing false contempt motions in retaliation for her earlier complaints.
